Strategies in Backgammon: The Paths to Victory
Simply put, the objective of backgammon is to race all of one’s game pieces off the board before the opponent does.
But as with all game objectives, it is easier said than done.
That is why it is imperative for online backgammon players, especially the beginners to know the basic strategy regarding backgammon as it will be the foundation of their journey in mastering the game.
Here are some of the basic strategy concepts any backgammon player worth his salt should know.
Hitting
Since the objective of the game is to get one’s game pieces off the board first, one’s basic strategy should focus both on reaching the objective quickly and at the same time preventing the other from doing likewise.
Knowing how to hit efficiently maybe the most basic among the other basic backgammon tips but it is the most essential in any player’s game plan. Hit, cover and prioritize the most advanced enemy checker when choosing what to hit. Never hit loose as it will only make you vulnerable in the consequent turns.
Communication
Communication is the term used for maintaining one’s checkers within six pips of each other. Communication is as important in war as it is in backgammon, as it ensures ‘backup’ for your pieces should they need cover or a point to rest.
Diversification
Diversification, or the spreading the position of your checkers evenly, is good way of increasing your odds of a good role.
Anchoring
Basically, anchoring refers to setting up a defensive position in your opponent’s home board, hence, the term ‘anchor’. It is akin to establishing a beachhead as in war.
It is important to develop ‘anchors’ early in the game as they provide landing spot for your pieces should they get hit. Also, anchors offer more advantage when placed in adjacent position.
Blocking and Priming
Aside from other basic strategy like hitting efficiently, setting up a blockade is the most effective way of preventing your opponent’s pieces from getting off the board. A blockade is made when a player builds points without gaps or openings precisely in front of the opponent’s checkers in the player’s home board.
The highest form of a blockade is called a prime, which is six points lying side by side causing the complete shut off of the escape of the enemy checkers. This basic strategy of trying to develop a prime in very game is a good tactic for a player as any opponent would be at a terrible disadvantage once a prime is in place.
